FIRST PICTURES FROM TERRENCE MALICK'S INTIMATE DRAMA "THE TREE OF LIFE" WITH BRAD PITT

Here are the first pictures from THE TREE OF LIFE, an unusual intimate drama coming out next May with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn in the lead roles. As far as I've understood, the film will be based on the magical and mystical atmosphere and unusual visuals as a kind of a hymn to life. It will trace the evolution of an eleven-year-old boy in the Midwest, Jack, one of three brothers. At first all seems marvelous to the child. He sees as his mother does, with the eyes of his soul. She represents the way of
love and mercy, where the father tries to teach his son the world's way, of putting oneself first. Each parent contends for his allegiance, and Jack must reconcile their claims. The picture darkens as he has his first glimpses of sickness, suffering and death. The world, once a
thing of glory, becomes a labyrinth.

I, myself, have always found the work of its director Terrence Malick (THE NEW WORLD, THE THIN RED LINE) rather blank and grayish, without a profound directorial vision and approach, but I know a lot of you love him. I'm still not sure whether I'll watch it since I've never liked Sean Pean's one-dimensional, overly dramatic, repetitive and self-centered acting. The trailer for the film  should come out this weekend.

  1. After what amounts to about two years of waiting or more, cinephiles are drooling in anticipation at finally receiving their first look at Terrence Malick's long-gestating drama, but I'm not.

  2. Me neither, Jaccsy. But he is known for shooting his films for years and years and years ... and than he comes out with a weak result.

  3. Yeah, Brad Pitt should attract the viewers but I'm not sure I like his filming style either. I will watch the trailer and see what I think.

  4. I've tried to find a trailer, but it's not out yet around the Net. There's just a very bad version over at YouTube and it looks interesting.

  5. I'll reserve judgement when I see the trailer as well.

  6. what I've seen in that bootlegged trailer looks quite good. But it is just a trailer, not the whole film.

  9. I heard about this movie from a couple of friends who are Malick fans. Personally I haven't been able to get through any of his films (especially Days of Heaven, blah), but they say it's because I lack the "intellectual stamina." Perhaps this one will be an exception (as I do like Brad Pitt), but I doubt it.

  10. I'd have to agree with your assessment of Sean Penn's acting. I'm unsure about this movie. I might skip it.

  11. Sounds like a good combo of actors & a director who, like Stanley Kubrick, is very choosy about his projects. For the true film buff, I highly recommend BADLANDS [1973] which stars a young Martin Sheen. It's a riveting film.

  12. @Andrew
    oh, so you're one of the fans :)

    @Lil'Vics
    ha ha ha .... that's a good one, Lil'Vics, "lacking intellectual stamina" :))) I love when people who love Nollan, Malick or any other of the "supposed" intellectual directors, say that to people who find them shallow and empty :)
    I personally think you're one of the most intelligent dear people in the blogosphere!

    @Lyndylove
    glad you agree with me darling :)

    @Lisa
    we shall check it out, Lisa :)

  13. Hi DEZMOND - Mmmm, I'll have to see. I'm not a fan of Sean Penn, at all. I am a fan of your snowing blog, though. Very cool!!! =D

  14. I'm with you on Sean Penn. What a tool.

  15. I'm curious about this film, perhaps with 2 big actors, Penn can keep his cool! I love the snow on your blog! It snowed last night, during our
    Christmas parade, magical!

  16. Hmmm, sounds....interesting. Will wait to pass judgement until the trailer is out.

  18. The premise sounds really interesting, but the details make me think it will be blasé or so concerned with its own pedantic and philosophical importance that I'll be bored.

    Brad Pitt's haircut there is totally hot though, so maybe that will be enough. Superficial, me? Nah...

  19. I like such haircuts, myself :))) And I agree with your first passage as well.

  20. I hate to disagree with you my friend Dezzy dear... but I'm on the opposite front in regards to Malick (though his movies do get a bit tedious at times), and I think that is a baaaaad haircut on Pitt. I think his best haircut so far is in Legends of the Fall. I don't know how excited I am yet about Tree of Life... I'll wait for the trailer which should be up soon.

  21. ok, I will forgive you on Malick :)) I had known you would disagree on that one, but how can you not like Brad's new hairdo???? :))))

  22. I quite like Penn, but then again my partner agrees with you and hates his acting. I like the look of this movie a lot though.

  23. I am not a Penn or Pitt fan, so I will probably skip this one.
